AI Calls Offside At The World Cup
7JUN
AI will call every offside at the 2026 World Cup. The system tracks each player with 29 cameras and signals the referee in seconds. It's the first time AI is the final word on a call in a major tournament.
The system is called SAOT — Semi-Automated Offside Technology. It watches each leg, arm, and shoulder, and pings the assistant referee's earpiece when a player is more than 10cm beyond the defender.
There's no replay review on top, so the AI's call is final. Lenovo built the camera system, FIFA owns the deployment. Football's most-argued judgment just became the cleanest live test of AI calling the shots.
Worth watching how fans react when AI disallows a goal the eye missed. The whole 'AI in the loop' rollout in other sports follows from this test.
