Apple Pays Google $1B To Rebuild Siri
Apple outsourced its AI brain. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple pays Google ~$1B/year for a custom Gemini model powering a rebuilt Siri in iOS 27. The company that built every layer of its stack just bet its most personal product on a rival.
Siri is getting a full rebuild for iOS 27, to be announced at WWDC June 8. The new Siri runs on a custom Google Gemini model - 1.2 trillion parameters, distilled to run both on-device and in Apple's Private Cloud Compute. Apple pays ~$1B/year for access.
The new Siri gets a standalone app, chat-bubble interface, lives in Dynamic Island, replaces Spotlight as system-wide search. It handles multi-step tasks, web search, image generation, coding, and file analysis. Users can also set Claude or Gemini as default alternatives for Apple Intelligence features.
This is the moment Apple's AI future got handed to Google's infrastructure. Apple is betting that platform depth - integration, privacy, on-device execution, trust - matters more than building the model. Whether that bet pays off in 2027 depends on whether the Gemini deal holds.
